A Santacruzan is
a religious and historical event held in many cities, towns and small villages throughout the Philippines during
the month of May. This Filipino tradition is considered one of the most colorful May-time festivals in the Philippines,depicting the discovery
of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. "The Queen of May Festivities" was introduced
by the Spanish colonists more than 100 years ago and lives on even in Europe and America.
Filipino Communities and Associations all over the world celebrate the Santacruzan with the same pageantry and glamour as
the townsfolk in their homeland.
The "Community of Love" of Hamilton is responsible for organizing the Santacruzan celebration every year.

limits to how we can share skills and care for others. She has also demonstrated extraordinary leadership in improving the
lives of women and girls in Hamilton in several areas.

HAMILTON — Today’s youth is the foundation of our society, so we look to our children to herald a brighter future.
The occasion was marked by performances from the Filipino community. Overall, the event was received as a great success. The
guest speaker, Russ Powers, Dundas Councilor and Representative for the City of Hamilton Municipal Council, greeted and congratulated
the community. Mr. Powers greatly supports the youth of PBA. Ruby Sarmiento Amog, Fundraiser and Organizer, acknowledged the
youth division and their efforts. Ruby continues to fundraise for their uniform, registration and travel expenses. Mrs. Amog
also announced and invited the youth to participate in the Literacy through Sports Program in collaboration with The Glob
Youth Centre, SISO and McMaster University. The goal of this program is to provide educational skills, while satisfying the
youth’s desire for sport and recreation. This program is free of charge and open to newcomers regardless of athletic
or academic ability. If you are between the ages of 7 to 25, male or female, and of Filipino heritage, you are eligible to
register for this BASKETBALL sports program.
Pavielyne Carandang, Miss Philippines Hamilton 2008 was in attendance and tossed the game ball. CONGRATULATIONS go out to
the newly elected officers of the PBA and to its President, Bobby Aviguetero. The divisions are as follows: a) Men's Open
Division (16 yrs. of age and over) limited to 16 teams only; b) Senior Division (30 and over); c) Master Division (40 and
over); d) youth division (Mosquito, Pee-Wee, Bantam and girls).
Hamilton, Ontario (November 14, 2008)
Another successful event was held in Hamilton Filipino Community Centre chaired by fundraising expert Ruby Sarmiento Amog
on Friday, November 14, 2008. The fundraising concert for St. John Bosco Chorale filled up the centre with an overcrowding
attendance of more than 200 people.
The St. John Bosco Chorale came to Canada on October 17 from the Philippines through the invitation of the Annunciation of
our Lord Parish priest Father Gary Schlack. The St. John Bosco Chorale was formed in Makati, Philippines in November 2000.
The group, through the leadership of its conductor, Lester Delgado, performed internationally on concert tours; Hong Kong
in 2004 and 2005 as well as in Europe (Germany, Belgium and Austria) last May to June 2007. Their repertoire consists of classical
to sacred songs, international songs, Filipino locale songs and traditional, kundiman and/or folk songs from the different
part of the country.
The group of nineteen performers has brought happiness to the different parishes in Mississauga, Hamilton and Brantford during
their one month visit in Hamilton. Their theme “Go the Distance” aimed to help churches fundraising to get the
youth back to their parishes and show-case the Filipino talents. That night was an extraordinary performance for this group
since the Hamilton Filipino Community Centre actually fundraised to help offset their travel cost. The HFCC fundraising net
revenue was $1000.00 and was donated to the group. One of the HFCC’s Affiliated Association, the Filipino Association
of Burlington donated $150.00 presented by its President, Josie Tejada. Miss Philippines Hamilton 2008, Pavielyne Carandang
was also present. It was a stunning emotion from the crowd to hear wonderful voices.
Once again great participation by the Hamiltonians, the sponsors, donors and the fundraising committee, Ruby was very thankful

PBA HAMILTON TEAMS PLAYED WELL IN PIBNA TOURNAMENT 2008
The PBA (Pilipino Basketball Association) Hamilton competed at the basketball tournament during the recent 32nd Philippine
Inter-City Basketball of North America in Ottawa, Ontario last August 30th & 31st, 2008. The following three teams made it
to the quarter finals, the 5’10 and under team, the Master team and the 11 and under team. The 11 and under team surprised
everyone with their tough and intense performance. The Men’s open team put forth their best efforts. The event allowed
players to show off their skills on an international level. Thank you to all the teams, sponsors, supporters, families &
friends for their continued support.
On its 7th year, Hamilton MardiGras Carnival is a multi-cultural extravaganza that invited people of all ethnicities
to join in the creation of one truly unforgettable community experence. The Hamilton MardiGras Carnival began at Bayfront
Park on Friday, August 8. The evening was marked by highlight performances from the Filipino community. Pavielyne Carandang,
Miss Philippines Hamilton 2008, greeted all those in attendance, and Romeo LingaoLingao and Krystal Valencia sang for the
audience,
Romeo in English, Krystal in Tagalog. On the following day, the MardiGras parade ran from John St. to Bayfront Park, attracting
a large and diverse turnout. The Filipino float, which was in first position, had the honour of being the only float designated
to just one community. New migrants, infants, children, senior citizens, and performers participated in the Filipino float.
Overall, the event was received as a great success and reservations for next year are already being planned. Special thanks
go out to Bernadette Ling, President of Hamilton MardiGras, for affording the Filipino community the opportunity to participate
in the two day event; to my committee Rey Viquiera, Lito Carandang, Joe Monaco and Sally Viquiera for their time and support
in preparing the Filipino float, thanks to Fil Santos as well; and to DJ Jooce, who volunteered his time and talent to make
the celebrations all the more memorable.

3. Showman 16 year old high school student Vincent Villanueva who essayed his own version of Me and Mrs Jones to the Final.

The Young Asian Canadian Singing Competition was organized by the Canadian Multicultural Council Asians in Ontario (www.cmcasians.com)

celebration of the Asian Heritage Month of May.

I have received a lot of requests to publish this PCA official newsletter for quite some time now, so here I am with my first
edition ever. No wonder I was very reluctant to do it because its a time consuming tasks to present a reasonable issue.
The other reason is it takes away lot of megabytes from my other websites just when I have a reliable supplier of very interesting
materials for my hometown.
The revived Filipino Burlington Association finally sent their representative to the HFCC Board of Directors. Danny Tejada
the better half of President, Josie, will be the official representative of this association. Danny will participate in the
monthly BOD meeting where community events are being coordinated to avoid duplication and garner support from everyone. Link to FAB page here.

Classes are on Fridays @ Blessed Sacrament school from 6:30pm-9:00pm. Enrolment is now on going, please pass this information

The fund raising initiated at the Filipino Community Centre last Sunday, Feb 26, 2006 has netted the HFCC Calamity Relief
Fund more than $6,386.17 up to May 1st and some more donations are expected. Many thanks to all the donors, the volunteers,
the food providers and intertainers for the days event, far too many to mention. You know who you are.

The Tango
A study shows the sultry Argentinean dance is better than walking for overall fitness and health Charlie Brown's canine companion,
Snoopy, exuberantly proclaims: "To live is to dance; to dance is to live."
It appears his words were more prophetic than comic-strip creator Charles Shultz realized. There's evidence that dancing as
exercise is better for the aging body than even walking is.
McGill University researchers have discovered that the sultry and complex dance moves of the Argentinean tango provide more
than good exercise, "they also improve balance.
"Our findings suggest that tango may be better than walking for improving the execution of complex tasks and the ability to
move within a restricted area with- out losing one's balance," says Patricia McKinley, professor at McGill's School of Physical
and Occupational Therapy. "An added benefit of tango is that its movements are performed to music, which is known to facilitate
performance of ambulatory activities."
The findings come from a study that involved 30 Montreal seniors, aged 62 to 90 years. All were healthy but had experienced
a fall within the past year and developed a fear of falling. Half of the seniors were given tango lessons, while the others
were assigned to a walking group, each group meeting for two hours twice a week. Motor and cognitive skills were evaluated
before and after the 10- week program.
The tango group showed more improvement in balance, posture and motor coordination as well as cognitive gains. The dancers
proved better at standing on one foot, turning in a confined space and performing a complex task while walking. Memory testing,
however, was inconclusive, perhaps, McKinley speculates, because the sample size was so small.
